Our process began by interviewing one of the architecture school’s faculty (Darla Lindbergh). Darla discussed fluidity of architecture as a profession and how much it has changed since the award’s inception in 1968. I wanted to reference this in my solution, so I began experimenting with warping text in real life to create imagery for the project. I used my laptop screen to display the wordmark, and then photographed it through the glass of the bottom of a coffee pot. Originally, I tried creating distortions with water, but the effect was too quick and subtle. Using oil created warping that was slower, gentler, and more visually pleasing, but this created a yellow/orange coloring for the imagery. By inverting these colors, I transformed the imagery in to a blue and white palette, which I realized was perfect; these are the colors of Penn StateUniversity.
