Design an original typeface based off of a Newhouse professor

I decided to design my typeface based off of Professor Greg Munno, a newspaper professor at Newhouse. I aimed to capture his energy and enthusiasm for his work and his students, while still maintaining his serious dedication for community journalism. Once I had my concept, I met with Professor Munno several times and spent months working in Glyphs Mini, creating several drafts of the typeface.

When Professor Munno speaks, his eyes light up with excitement and curiosity. It’s the same passion and energy that he brings to everything, from his time as a local journalist at the Syracuse Post-Standard, to the classes that he teaches at Newhouse, to his work in community-focused research and reporting. He leads with warmth and a dedication to tell stories, and to help students grow into storytellers as well. Avid, meaning “having a keen interest or enthusiasm for something,” is bold and energetic, with thick consistent strokes and sharp slab serifs. Its round apex and bowls are friendly and open. The low crossbars on the capital A and H ground the typeface, and are a reference to how everything Professor Munno does is grounded in his passion for storytelling.
