We were invited to create the marketing and exhibition design system for the San Francisco Exploratorium’s Summer 2018 exhibit, “Inflatable: Expanding Works of Art,” a collaboration with Colossal. Meant to reach both residents and visitors, the objectives of the work was to drive attendance at the exhibit and increase museum membership rates.
We coded and customized a software algorithm to create illustrated typography that expands to fill whatever space and situation copy was needed. We utilized 3D software to help us find the right arrangement and scale for every application.
Our city-wide campaign was centered around these bold inflatable letterforms. We designed them to be as tactile as the experience itself, bringing the playful spirit of the show into the streets of San Francisco. The letters “blow up” to fill whatever space they're in: from a bus, to a billboard, to a banner ad - every expression is unique. Each surface a new canvas, we invited viewers into the wondrous world of "Inflatable.”
Attendance at the Exploratorium went up over 20% during the summer exhibition, while other museums in the Bay Area experienced a moderate decline. The exhibition was highlighted in Time Out: San Francisco, SF Chronicle, and cited by the San Francisco Travel Association as one of “Eight Great Cultural Events in San Francisco This Summer.”
