The assignment was to honor Shirley Temple Black with a stamp in the U.S. Postal Service’s Legends of Hollywood series.
The stamp art is an oil painting based on a 1935 image from Curly Top, one of the child star's iconic movie roles, with emphasis on the nostalgic, sweet memories.
Twenty-two million stamps were produced and were enthusiastically received. Within eight months 78% of the total print run had sold. This stamp issuance garnered a great deal of media and sales continue to be robust.
