Most COVID-19 communications are focused on the responsibility of the individual, but we needed the entire community to get behind our effort, so we worked to build a sense of shared responsibility and solidarity through our work. Our team crafted a couple of “we” statements to accomplish this goal. We used face masks as a creative visual device to send a hopeful and encouraging message to everyone. The face masks were positioned to cover up portions of the statements. With this design technique, the phrases were transformed from negative messages into positive and powerful calls to action. This clever visual device illustrated how something as simple as a face mask has the power to change the whole course of the pandemic if everyone wears one.
