Assignment: “Plastic Free July” is a global movement that helps millions of people to be part of a solution to pollution. “Save Our Beaches,” in Boca Raton, FL, along with several groups, organized activities to bring awareness to the necessity of eliminating plastic pollution.
Dr. Karen Leader, art historian, educator, and director for community projects empowering youth activists, gave me the task to design a poster for social media to promote awareness of plastic pollution and for the screening and panel discussion around the documentary film, “The Story of Plastic,” a Pale Blue Dot Media production in association with React To Film.
The film illustrates the catastrophic effects of plastic pollution. From poisonous emissions from production and processing, plastics last and consume our landscapes with disastrous consequences.
Approach: As opposed to an illustrative poster design, I explored a typographic approach. Examining the word “plastics,” I quickly noticed the word “last” contained in it. It was this discovery that inspired the design solution.
Results: In Dr. Leader’s words, “This is great!” The poster was effectively shared via Facebook and Email Blasts.
