The project brief was to create a bilingual design system of book jackets for different literature genres.
The main driver of the design should be typography and the design should work as an extendable system in order to create recognition.

In the creation process, I had to understand the main content of each story and distil its more important elements in order to represent the main idea.

Three different genre of books had to be visually unified into a series not only consolidating the layout and the composition but also though the art direction by creating a mysterious atmosphere in order to attract readers.

The creation of the Chinese fonts is based on traditional Chinese-brush calligraphy, incorporating soft and distinctive elements inspired by tradition, yet giving it a simple and modern aesthetic look; the traditional calligraphy structure is taken however all the brush shapes are designed with curved elements and special Chinese ancient cloud patterns to create the glyphs’ shapes.

The design was well received by the teacher and the classmates alike; the design solution demonstrated a successful combination of the Chinese and English languages as well as illustration creating an intriguing series of book jackets.

The design works both as an individual book jacket and as book jacket design system, therefore creating a recognisable series that can be easily identifiable.
