I shot this campaign for SIBF, the Sydney international brass music festival 2014. The images were used for the banners, posters and the festival program.
The brief was to produce images outside the conservative conventions of classical music. To give lots of attention and a little controversy. The Creative Director, Heather Davies, came up with the general concept. She said I was the only photographer she'd met who's work and creative thought showed I was capable of fulfilling her vision.
My approach was to shoot using the barest essential of time and facilities to produce the illusion of a great performance. We spent 2 hours in a brick walled acrobatic rehersal studio. I placed myself and the performer, Lia Reutens, at the same level. I wanted to give the illusion of flying with the performer high in a classic theatre. In post processing I added the vignetting to give the illusion of a spotlight.
The Sydney Morning Herald published a story prior to the festival relating how much the photos had inspired the Chicago based composer, Jim Stephenson. The result was that in “homage to those images” his orchestral work ‘Hanging By A Thread’ received its world premier at the festival in Sydney in July 2014.
