D&AD is an educational charity with a purpose to set creative standards, educate, inspire and promote good design and advertising. Ampersand is also a magazine obsessed by ideas. The Ampersand name came about for a number of reasons. First it was at the heart of the D&AD logo. Secondly it expressed connection—the glue that could hold an infinite diversity of content together. Lastly, within a masthead, the ampersand could portray the home of all great ideas—the thought bubble. Typographically, the issues take a dramatic turn, utilising a custom-engineered typeface with a key difference—the ability to form a third dimension, with interlocking ascenders and descenders, symbolic of the 3D nature of the digital medium. Ampersand Digital looks at how digital design is one of the fastest and evolving fields within the creative industries. These 2 issues focus on the latest developments and talks to the many rising stars of the digital world. The Awards Issue is created to coincide with the D&AD awards celebrating the year’s most inspiring creativity. This issue is the last in the digital volume, and uses Ampersand’s bold, graphic approach to provide a showcase for the featured work.
