A boarding school becomes the setting of a murder mystery involving a game that goes terribly wrong. The publisher wanted to position this book as a smart, unexpected and eye catching young adult mystery.
I wanted to create an image that takes a boarding school / ordinary student atmosphere and tweaks it to become something unsettling and foreboding. To do this, I used a number tally written in pencil on regular notepaper with 2 pencils. The position and shape of the paper with the pencils creates a skull and cross bones, with the number tally becoming the eyes and nose. The teeth of the skull are formed by the torn edge of the notebook paper. The overall result is a clever image that captures murder/suspense using only every day school implements.
A much loved cover celebrated by the author and publisher.
