I paid close attention the Hozier's musical themes while designing ideas. The majority of his music sounds very beautiful but has either serious, politically driven messages, lost love, or just macabre ideas. I also searched through his social media to see what things he was interested in or thinking about at the time. I chose a color scheme that matched the album, a sort of sea glass green color, for the background and his name. The activist and macabre themes in his music, as well as his general vibe, made me think of religious icon art and so I drew him with a heavy outline, large wide eyes, included a stained glass texture, and circled his head in a halo. He had also recently posted about an Irish god of love who had a halo of birds and so, to evoke the beautiful feelings in his music, I made the birds joyous and a secondary halo on top of the traditional one. The actual design process involved several rounds of pencil and ink illustration to get the base correct. After it was scanned in I decided I wanted to do all the line work digitally so the hand drawing was used to keep my design accurate and trace over.
