Our assignment for LIMBO, a film about Omar— a young Syrian refugee who is forced to leave home to avoid being sent to war— was to bring a quirky, upbeat tone to an otherwise difficult, heartbreaking story. We wanted to create key art that depicted Omar’s journey with a fresh and hopeful perspective.
Using the title as a driving force of inspiration, we wanted to create the sense of what it might feel like to be stuck in limbo. Manipulating the scale of the cast and the letters in the film’s title in an unconventional way helped convey a feeling being lost. Scotland’s foreign and somewhat desolate landscape also helped support the feeling of isolation. The developing bond between Omar and his friends showed them on a path to find what was missing in their lives. Taking all this into consideration helped shape what was to be the final key art for the film.
The movie garnered critical accolades and provided an important perspective on the reality of refugee life. The client loved this presentation and Cold Open is still getting praise for the film’s final art.
