Our clients at Netflix wanted us to make something that not only highlighted the incredible talent that went into this series, but that pushed the boundaries as to what anime is or can be. When you have a Black creator and showrunner, LeSean Thomas, working with a revered Japanese studio, MAPPA, with Flying Lotus creating the score, and Lakeith Stanfield voicing Yasuke; the stakes were high.
Though Yasuke is a real, historical figure, the series itself is not a purely historical account of his life. We wanted to play with the fantasy and mecha-anime influences of this anime, while bringing something otherworldly to it. The dreamy (or perhaps nightmareish) quality of our piece was intentional, as we also sought to create movement within this static piece.
The show itself was a success, both among critcs and general audiences. We were able to make the poster that embodied everything our clients asked for.
