Assignment
These posters are part of a traveling, multi-platform collection of new designs, called "Ongoing Matter," that mobilize political engagement with the The Mueller Report. The goal of this project is to make The Mueller Report more accessible to a wider audience, and subsequently facilitate increased engagement with its findings. These are seven in a larger series of thirty posters that have been designed to illuminate the major threats to democracy as cited in The Mueller Report. The collection is currently traveling around the United States.
Approach
The poster series seeks to clarify what is documented in The Mueller Report and respond to what is continuing to come to light in the aftermath of the 2016 U.S. election. The Mueller Report, itself, lays the foundation. However, despite its magnitude and the dissemination of its content via books, news reporting, and podcasts—and despite the general public’s interest in it—the length and overall layout of the report is a barrier for digesting the information. As a result, the average American citizen may not be aware of the gravity, significance, or substance of the information contained within. As the 2020 presidential election approaching, it is more important than ever that the average American understands what occurred in the last election cycle.
Results
"Ongoing Matter" is a living showcase of current political artefacts, and follows a long history of posters as a medium for empowering citizens at crucial societal, political, and cultural moments in time. The show has already exhibited at the Grunwald Gallery of Art and Krasl Art Center, and will travel to Cleveland State Galleries and Lightbox Studios.
As designers, our charge is to use the art of image and type to communicate information in an accessible way. As a non-partisan undertaking, moreover, our overarching goals are to help educate the public and inspire activism, regardless of political ideology or affiliation. Lastly, in a society where the deluge of disinformation and misinformation is an increasing threat to democratic norms, “Ongoing Matter” is an effort to help protect the integrity of the democratic process through shared, factual knowledge. After intense parsing of the full 448-page Mueller Report, the designers on this project sought to bring the most important facts to life with the creation of large-format, digitally offset designs.
