New Relic, the dominant leader in the digital intelligence market, approached IA with the mission of creating “Nerdvana” for 300+ data nerds who call Portland home.
The design approach was guided by the company’s core values, which include: • Accountable • Bold • Passionate • Authentic • Connected • Frictionless
The design would tell a story of both New Relic’s own “data nerds” and those from history in an understated and vibrant design inspired by the Flatiron School illustration styles and simple iconography.
An eclectic mix of place-making murals educates employees and visitors on historic and inspiring contributions to the software industry. Rooms are named after distinguished scientists and mathematicians, which were selected by New Relic. With a focus on the achievements of women like Grace Hopper and Ada Lovelace, the design conveys New Relic’s passion for groundbreaking innovation. Local bicycle culture is also celebrated. Guest bike parking and a bicycle art installation featuring a wood map graphic of Portland bridges is incorporated into the reception-a reminder of New Relic’s pride in its city.
