Redesign a product you feel has issues or needs a refresh.
I chose to redesign crutches. Crutches have remained unchanged for a long time and actually have several user issues. They can be very uncomfortable and even cause injury to the upper body while trying to heal the lower extremities due to improper weight distribution and pinching nerves and joints. The main issue I wanted to tackle was the joint pressure and impact during walking. I wanted my crutches to absorb shock, ease the gait, relieve pressure on the shoulders and back, and be more comfortable. I also wanted to refine the design to have a sleek and modern look.
My final deliverable is a set of crutches in which the body frame is made from carbon fiber and one large hydraulic shock-absorbing cylinder. Your weight is also evenly distributed between your under-arms and your forearms, to relieve pressure on just one joint. The forearm rests are ergonomic in nature, and ultra-customizable. Comfort is vastly taken into consideration with a back sup- porting strap for posture, and comfort foam pads.
