Celebrating our fascination with humankind’s technological version of itself, this exhibition designed by Kit Hinrichs for the Experience Music Project and Science Fiction Museum in Seattle, Washington draws from a one-of-a-kind assemblage of toy robots from the collection of noted designer Tom Geismar, founder and principal of Chermayeff & Geismar. Inspired by antique tin and wooden toys, samurai warriors and mid-20th century Japanese film characters, these intricately detailed miniatures are displayed almost like jewelry in a large, bottom-lit case and surrounded by ten foot tall photo murals of the same robots to create a unique juxtaposition of imagery. The descriptive signage is “held” by giant 2-dimensional robots as you walk around the exhibition.
