The "Great American Songbook" concert series has represented music from a number of American composers who developed varied jazz styles over a number of years. Each artist's composition being a substantial fragment of the whole of the American jazz songbook. My approach was to incorporate jazz related fragments of my personal experience; for instance, looking out of a hotel room on a rainy night aware of the rhythm of the cars roaming below, a club illuminated in the distance, neon signs reflecting off of shiny streets, musician's instruments relaying thoughts into music, the energy of the notes communicating with the listener and drifting out into the world. I tried to create a poster that overall was celebratory in nature, inviting the viewer to a pleasurable, possibly surprising evening, to experience the sounds of innovation, i.e. the genius of the Great American Jazz Songbook.
