Assignment: Sovereign Spirits was created for a Design IV packaging project. All of the deliverables were created specifically for this assignment including concept, logo, design, illustration, and the final package. The goal of this project was to create a bourbon company that sets itself apart by presenting unique illustration, creative writing, and craftsmanship. The aura of Sovereign Spirits is presenting a luxury experience, which would be for the knowledgeable bourbon drinker. However, there are different tiers of bourbon that would be sold: a 12 year, 15 year, and a 20 year - which would accommodate the varying budgets of our customers. However, quality is always in mind, and this is distinctly shown in how the bottle rests within the box. A specific angle has been selected to ensure that the bourbon never touches the cork - our bourbon always retains its integrity.
Approach: Each illustration used on the different bourbon bottles is derived from varying royal figures throughout history. For example, The King’s Bourbon (which is the twenty year bourbon) is based off of the identity of King Charles the 8th of France - who went mad in his old age and killed himself (so the legend goes). The packaging needed to reference this story, so to compliment the tale Blood Wood is utilized for the bourbon box and cigar box. To make this package more visually interesting, a Walnut trim was added, which creates more contrast for the overall design. The cigars labels present illustrations of the King to tie their connection to the bourbon, which is that they have been infused with The King’s Bourbon to enhance their flavor.
Results: This selection of bourbon caters to a variety of audiences, from the casual drinker, to the whiskey expert. Good whiskey is prized possession, whether you are having a glass on a Sunday afternoon, or on a Friday night, the bourbon you drink should be an enjoyable experience. Sovereign Spirits is founded on the idea of an enjoyable experience, and it captures quality, taste, and exclusivity while remaining within reach of a variety of audiences.
