The Supersonic Project is a personal project on chronicling the history, design, lifestyle, and technology of Concorde, the world's only luxury supersonic aircraft. The hand printed five color silk screen poster was created to share at a lecture on the project. For the passenger, the Concorde experience was completely defined by design. From flying at over twice the speed of sound, to each item a passenger would come into contact with, everything was considered with design perfection in mind. This resulted in a beautiful looking aircraft, and a universe of beautiful objects for use while flying it. The poster commemorates the years Concorde flew, and aims to evoke the elegance of the aircraft itself and of the remarkable of travel experience.
The form and shape of the Concorde aircraft itself was a thing of beauty. The result of engineers working many years to achieve an aerodynamic masterpiece. The delta shape of the wing, the needle nose, the perfectly polished exterior to reduce friction, all informed by the physics of flying so fast and so high. This resulted in an aircraft that was sculptural and aesthetically elegant as an object alone. Relying simply on the beauty of the geometric elegance of the the aircraft, the shapes overlay to form the poster artwork. When reaching Concorde's cruising altitude of 60,000 feet (twice that of standard jets) the top of the sky fades to black at the Earth's Troposphere. This is echoed in the fade to deep blue at the top of the poster.
The rich pure color of the silkscreen ink, the craft of the hand pulled print on heavy paper stock, and the elegance in the restrained design treatment, all intended to evoke of the quality and exceptional nature of the Concorde experience. Resulting in a limited edition artwork that is in tribute to this highly distinguished chapter in design history.
