In Issue Three of The Standard, an ongoing series of print publications produced for Sappi Fine Paper, Studio Hinrichs was asked to examine and showcase ways that varnish and coatings can be used as a design technique. Designed to serve as a comprehensive reference tool, Standard 3 demonstrates a full range of techniques, with instructive notes, price/complexity ratings, a glossary of important terms, and a paper finish comparison. The book features images (food, fashion, etc.) where such techniques would make a powerful impression and covers the gamut from simple to complex. High-end marketing and catalog producers can gain tips on how to make their product so real that viewers can feel its texture and, in the case of some food products, smell its tantalizing aroma. “Varnish and Coatings” is the third book in The Standard series produced by Hinrichs and team. The other two were on “Prepress: Preparing Files for Print” and “Color Management.”
