The Jackie Robinson Timepiece is the fifth installment in the Great Americans Series. Limited to only 442 pieces, a complete giftset was built around the watch. Jackie Robinson was chosen as he was a formidable advocate for human rights, entrepreneur, and first African American baseball player to start in the major leagues. The packaging was meant to look modern with an "Americana" / heritage feel.
All exterior surfaces are wrapped with grey linen (reminiscent of traditional baseball uniforms). The outer lid features a portrait of Jackie Robinson that's been silkscreened onto the linen. Once open, the customer is greeted by a linen-wrapped, felt-lined portfolio containing collectible (Shinola-designed) pins, postcards, and a hand-lettered mini pennant. Red stitching and loop details tie to a baseball's red threads. Under the portfolio, a linen-wrapped watch box sits on a 45 degree angle in a blue-flood interior. The lid of the watch box is foil-stamped with Jackie's retired uniform number and surrounded with markings inspired by a baseball diamond.
The end result was a cohesive giftset that surrounded an already beautiful timepiece. The pieces of ephemera added to the heritage feel while their graphics and treatment looked modern.
