We were asked to produce the annual report for Alternatives For Girls. Founded in 1987, AFG is an important organization in Southwest Detroit helping homeless and high-risk girls avoid violence, teen pregnancy and exploitation, offering them the support and resources needed to make positive choices in their lives. Alternative For Girls’ Prevention, Shelter and Outreach Programs have empowered more than 100,000 girls to date.
For the AFG Annual Report, we chose to use a large-scale Zine format, bright CMYK colors and impactful black-and-white portraits to capture the essence of the organization. Participants in the three Programs told their own stories, in their own words, providing proof of AFG’s powerful impact on their lives. Hand-painted typography in India ink was used to express emotion and individuality. The report was economically printed on newsprint with 4-color digital printing. Each 11x15-inch copy was 24 pages long and bound with sewing machine stitching.
The AFG Annual Report impressed prospective donors in both scale and content and was a highlight at the Annual AFG Fundraising Dinner. Alternatives For Girls continues to use the graphic design in their corporate literature and website.
