Woman's Work was a self assigned personal project. I sought out women that were excelling at professions that have historically been male dominated positions. There was no exclusion to whom we considered. The strongest factors that led us to the people you see now were availability and excitement for participation. At the onset we did create a long list of professional positions that fit the bill, but after a few shoots and making contact with some friends, the participants just started flowing in on their own.

I approach all environmental portraits similarly regardless of who I am photographing. In these images I was working with a butcher, a farmer, a firefighter, a lobster fisher, and a truck driver. Gender is not a consideration in my approach. Some pillars of my environmental portraiture include heroic framing of subject, a wide perspective showing an expansive landscape, unique interplay of hero subject and their environment, and a mix of strobe and available lighting that spotlights the individual.

The project was launched in late fall 2016. The body of work was featured on aphotoeditor.com, from there it was picked up by kotke.org. This feature acted as the spring board which lead to Women’s Work published features in over 20 different countries. The reach of the project seems to be unending and continues to be gain traction.
