What is a Poster? Many designers have created thousands of posters and now find this question obsolete. Maybe they asked it in the beginnings of poster design, maybe only for the first one or not even then, because since Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (France painter), who is considered the father of poster design, to these days lies a long historical period in which poster design has been accepted as a separate discipline within the area of graphic design and visual communications and even wider, so that a special definition is no more necessary. The visual charm of his posters lies in the fact that he moved the picture from a gallery or a museum to a poster pillar, which means into open space, into the streets and squares… This new democratic form of visual communication has actually not changed, apart from the fact that selected posters are now exhibited in galleries and museums as classic art. There are even cases when they are originally conceived for these venues. It is in fact questionable to what extent the poster is a design project.Thus I have asked the question from the title (what is a poster?) along with each new poster project, together with another and more basic question: how can design on a given paper surface and in the available printing technique be defined? Communication is built into poster design, although there are entirely hermetic posters that we still consider successful. These are more contemplative works, able to last in time and endure longer viewing. Streets, squares and public places are actually exhibition venues that measure the value of posters.

The book ONLY POSTERS is project how author communication in the street or galleries and museums. The poster for the 7th Zagreb Salon shows this best, because at the poster location design is executed with paint across the pavement as well. Design, the concept or the author’s idea that determines the poster can be visually simple, but as a notion very layered and harder to decipher because of the visual emptiness of white paper (5th Salon of Young Artists). The exhibition venues of posters are galleries and museums where visitors, design enthusiasts, professional designers, but also those generally interested in fine arts can see them aside of their basic function. Sometimes museums include them into their collections and permanent displays. Many of my posters have been sent to international exhibitions and later included into museum collections without my knowledge.

The book ONLY POSTERS is education for young designers or information for new generation of them. This book have a question what is a poster and give answer.
Finally the poster is just a piece of paper that is not perceived as such thanks to the illustrations, photographs and text on it. The poster series for the Students’ Gallery is based on showing paper in dimensions 70 x 100 that features only the obligatory text! Yes, everything listed, described and shown on the pages of this booklet is my definition of poster design!
