Book cover design and interior layout for poetry collection by Isabel Duarte-Gray. Even Shorn takes its title from the Song of Solomon and that book’s equation of pastoral feminine beauty with the plenty of harvest. Duarte-Gray’s poems combine local orature, family history, and the folklore of Western Kentucky.
Approach
The cover image was inspired by the flowers mentioned in the book, Solomon’s Seal, bearing resemblance to teeth. These poems were described by the author as "having teeth". Naturally, I couldn't resist such an indelible image.
Results
The client and author were very pleased. The author even got a tattoo of the cover image.
