This poster was designed to promote PCC Sylvania Theater’s 2018 production of "A Mid Summer Night’s Dream". The goal was to capture the mystery, humor and elemental beauty of William Shakespeare’s romantic comedy and to broaden its viewer base beyond those already familiar with the play.
When approaching this project, I started with the iconic character, Nick Bottom, whose head is transformed temporarily into a donkey during the play. He is highly emblematic and is often used to depict "A Midsummer Night’s Dream". However this production is non-traditional—implementing puppets, ladders and extremes of scale to tell the story. It is expressive and experimental and therefore needed a poster that reflected its contemporary interpretation.
The solution was a wooden donkey mask that emerges from a skewed landscape of type. It suggests transformation and invites the viewer into the limbo space between our world and that of the fairies.
