The assignment was to come up with a new approach to the U.S. Postal Service annual Love series that would be beautiful and appeal across generations, appropriate for many different occasions and love of all kinds: romantic love, friendship, and love of family.
The art director/designer chose to work with an artist who used type and illustration to create lovely floral designs and asked her to create a fanciful garden around the word "Love." The hand-painted illustration, with its color palette of pink, coral, and yellow, has a contemporary feeling that also retains a nostalgic appeal. The flowers—stylized roses, peonies, and dahlias—together with green and gold foliage and filler plants give the art a lush, romantic look. The art’s whimsical, vintage feel looks to the past, yet is very much rooted in a modern sensibility.
The stamps have been exceptionally popular: Ninety-nine percent of the stamps produced have been sold.
