The assignment was to create a shopping bag for a retail store of our invention. With the name of the store serving as the jumping-off point for an idea, we were given the freedom to use any material for the shopping bag, and also the creative license to bend the nature of a shopping bag in an unusual way. Part of our task was to take advantage of the fact that we were in charge of both the problem and the solution.
After choosing to do a boutique eyeware store and coming up with the name "Perception Eyeware" the idea was for the form of the bag to be a metaphor of how glasses change the way we perceive the world.
The result was a shopping bag that used optical illusions to play with the perception of the viewer. The form of the bag was crafted in such a way that the top opening of the bag is a rectangle, which turns into a square at the base when looking down into the bag. This in return created a faceted exterior shape. A sheet of translucent vellum paper encompasses the outside, creating an overlay affect between the images printed on the bag itself a the translucent sheet. Lastly the handle and interior employ another visual illusions with the use of concentric lines. The customer is left with a shopping bag that is perceived differently depending on the viewer's vantage point.
