The annual JIDA Design Museum Selection has been hosted by the Japan Industrial Designers’ Association (JIDA) since 1998. The objective of the JIDA Design Museum Selection is to archive and preserve actual design products to serve as educational tools for future designers.
We celebrate our 20th anniversary this year. Over the past 20 years, the amount of products collected has exceeded more than 450. In this year’s Selection project, We have selected 768 products until now, out of which 457 were donated to our collection.
Along with the 20th Selection project, we organized the Premium 10 project, in which we reselected 10 excellent designed products within the 20 years of the Selection’s activity that showcase the power of the various currents of Japanese design. And We held a commemorative exhibition and forum.
This book is a catalogue of the "20th Anniversary of the JIDA Design Museum Selection Project", which was recorded these activities. Because of such backgrounds, It was required to the expression of Japan in this design project.
The 20th anniversary catalogue is based on the concept: “Japan” that encompasses all the selected products included in the catalogue. In order to execute this concept, it was appropriate to use the red and white colors of the Japanese flag than to use designed patterns to bring the products out more clearly. The color of JIDA Selection is orange. Red and orange that neighbors in the color circle, matches well, in which can be taken as a metaphor to how this JIDA Selection relates with Japan.
The letters used for the cover title are inspired by the beautiful book that was published 30 years ago. In the age when digital fonts are common, the letters are adopted from the “Monsen” Standard Book. Leading to a new knowledge and views by visiting the old. The production process of this catalogue balanced the idea of the Selection project itself.
This catalogue was printed on April 1, 2019, and 2700 copies of catalogue were printed. It will be distributed free of charge to educational institutions and art museums, not only in Japan but also overseas.
I hope that this catalogue will contribute to the design by reaching to many people, and aware of JIDA's activities.
