At the commencement of the Master of Fine Arts program at Otis College of Art and Design, Otis Design Week is organized to offer a series of workshops and a subsequent exhibition. The primary objective of this project is to establish the Otis Design Week Exhibition as a platform for incoming graphic design MFA students to cultivate new connections and strengthen pre-existing relationships in a professional and socially conducive environment.
At the inception of the academic term, I devised a top design inspired by a Korean traditional game, with the intention of showcasing my cultural heritage and providing a shared source of enjoyment for all participants. As the top rotates, the sketched components coalesce to form a unified pattern image. The top-making kit affords individuals the opportunity to personalize their creation, incorporating elements such as nationality, current location, pronouns, and personality traits.
Furthermore, I augmented the slogan "You Belong Here" to "We Belong Here". Originally employed as a welcome-back message for the return of students, staff, and faculty to campus after an extended period of remote study and work, "We Belong Here" conveys a deeper sense of camaraderie and belongingness.
The initiative succeeded in capturing the attention and stimulating the curiosity of students, imbuing Otis Design Week with a convivial ambiance and fostering closer bonds amongst participants. Notably, the Dean Professor was intrigued by the use of the word "We" and is currently deliberating on its potential implications.
