To start the project, I had to figure out a theme and name for the project. After going through a few names, I settled on “Novilunium,” which means new moon in Latin. This set up the theme of a galaxy-based project that incorporates a particular shape for each box. I wanted to make sure that stars were the connecting feature of each box to help tie the set together. Not only that, I knew that I wanted an overarching die-cut to be prominent in each box to help emphasize that concept, which are the big star, the planet, and the crescent moon. These die-cut choices were intentional since I wanted to make it so that it would read as “the stars of the galaxy, the planet in the galaxy and its moon” when it was arranged appropriately. Additionally, it would still have the same meaning when you view it the other way in this format. I also wanted to experiment with gold leaf on this project, and it was used to mimic a nebula, galaxy, or star effect that can be seen in space. The other purpose of the gold leaf was to help make each card box unique since the pattern wasn’t the same for each one.
