Based on my research and personal interests, I knew that I wanted to utilize global warming as my topic. It is a subject matter that continually demands more and more attention as humanity increases its emissions of pollutants.
The designs I received inspiration from effectively visualize their information with the design principle, scale. I wanted to implement this principle into my own design to accentuate the growing prominence of global warming in our world. My infographics successfully convey this concept, as it uses time and scale to illustrate the severity of global warming. There is a clear, consistent trend that carries across each set of data.
I designed my typography in a modern grid layout. The sans-serif typefaces reflect contemporary tastes and bring this modern issue of global warming closer to its social context through graphic design.
I wanted to highlight the rising temperatures of the Earth with a color palette of warm, analogous hues. For contrast, and to resemble the polluting smoke in the atmosphere, I wanted to use a muted, dark purple. This sharp contrast between the foreground and background is both attention-grabbing and legible for various sizes of type. These colors are the basis for all of my design elements. Some infographics utilize a gradation from white to yellow to orange, further highlighting the degradation of the Earth's ice extent due to heatwaves.
