This assignment was called the Grab Bag project. Our professor bought various items from the dollar store and placed them into a brown bag. We then grabbed our item out of the bag at random and were given the task of creating a new package for our item. We were challenged to create a new, fresh attitude for the product by changing it in some way or focusing on a new aspect.
When I received the corn cob trays, I wondered who would buy such a specific item. The first thought that came into my mind was a stylish hostess. However, the original trays were a bright yellow plastic eyesore. So, I spray painted the trays a bronze color to make them more sophisticated in order for them to appeal to the target market. The new attitude I brought to the corn cob trays is an elegant, homey, and naturalistic style and made the trays seem like a product every host should have in her home.
To bring this style home, I used a light green, uncoated, heavyweight paper with flecks in it to touch on the more natural, farm-to-table feel. I created illustrations that elevated the product's vibe to be more elegant and stylish, and I wrote a poem for the back that made the product relatable and homey. The design is simple and down to earth while still being classy and decorative.
