- Title
- Orchestra Baobab Record Cover
Assignment
This project was given by Professor Peter Ahlberg. The goal was to design a record jacket for an Afro-Cuban band called Orchestra Baobab. The dimension of the jacket was 12 x 12 inches, and the record was Specialist in All Styles.
Approach
Before I begin anything, I had listened to the tracks of Specialist in All Styles in order to know what kind of music the band plays and its overall “vibe”. After I have listened to the music good amount of times, I watched a documentary about the band. From the documentary, I was able to acquire more information and thus understand it more profoundly. Then, I researched about the graphic images/designs of its place, such keywords were “Cuba, Jazz, and Design”. From the research, I was able to identify a popular color tone.
Results
From the documentary, I found the confined-geometric interior space of interviewees’ houses interesting, and I took this geometric concept into the design of the cover. For its color, I had chosen a set of colors from a very vibrant and colorful Afro-Cuban woman cloth, which is the colors matched the jazz vibe of the band. In the end, my visual communication was to create a confined jazz space through its geometric shapes/patterns with the vibrant colors.
