Bechtel is one of the most respected global engineering, construction, and project management companies in the world, and a cornerstone of innovation in the industry. Since the company’s founding in 1898, Bechtel has completed more than 25,000 extraordinary projects in 160 countries on all seven continents. Bechtel commissioned visual communications firm, Nesnadny + Schwartz (N+S), to create its combined Online Annual Report and Sustainability Report. The firm’s role was to develop the conceptual and visual theme, create the overall design, and manage production from inception to delivery.
As leaders in innovation, Bechtel wanted to communicate the company’s commitment to transformative solutions not only in engineering, procurement, and construction, but also through protecting the environment, conserving natural resources, supporting local communities, and improving economies. To express this direction, Nesnadny + Schwartz proposed the dual theme of “Breaking New Ground” and “Ground Breaking” to communicate the idea of building and the more figurative notion of visionary thinking. Clean, well-structured responsive design, intuitive user interface combined with impactful project photography supported the message.
As a privately-held, family-owned company Bechtel is not required to publish a financial statement. The 2015 Online Bechtel Report and Sustainability Report is the principal site used by the company to communicate corporate goals and year-end accomplishments with employees, directors, customers, as well as various local, state, and national governmental agencies. To date the Online Bechtel Report and Sustainability Report has received positive and supportive endorsements from both external and internal audiences based on the project’s visual appeal, usability, and concise informational organization.
