Poster for the Donaueschinger Musiktage [music days] 2020.
The sound, the murmur of the waves. The poster motif, which is indeed inscribed with a roar, also something powerful and sublime. The two halves are important for the image design: the calm water, the restless water and the crest of the wave in between. I understand it to be emblematic of global change and, in particular, of the process of decolonization of the arts, which in New Music is proceeding slowly.
This motif is about the immersive experience of music, about the moment when a surge envelops the body. But it is also about the globe rotating and about people and thoughts that – especially recently – are changing Europe and the world.
On the one hand, the typography announces this year's Music Days; on the other hand, the 2020 breaks through and caresses the lettering like water.
The Donaueschingen Music Days are an annual festival for contemporary art music organized by the "Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde"[Society of Friends of Music], the Südwestrundfunk and the city of Donaueschingen in the Donauhallen and other venues in Donaueschingen, which always takes place on the third weekend in October. It is the oldest festival for new music, and usually consists exclusively of world premieres. It is currently funded by the state of Baden-Württemberg, the German Federal Cultural Foundation and the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation. For several years now, all concerts have been broadcast live on Südwestrundfunk's cultural program SWR2 and on the Internet.
