The assignment was to create a vinyl album design that centered around photography. I chose to do a design for Dedicated, the fourth studio album from indie pop darling Carly Rae Jepsen. The design includes a cover, a back, an inside gatefold, and labels for the vinyl.
Since all of Dedicated’s songs are love songs, I decided to base the concept of the design around common symbols for love, like hearts and roses. In the photography for the album, a hand is offering the viewer a rose, mimicking how Jepsen offers her love to the subjects of her songs. This direct imagery, combined with the name "Dedicated", also implies that the songs themselves are gifts dedicated to Jepsen's fans.
Furthermore, Jepsen originally was going to do a disco album for her fourth release. Although that idea was scrapped, the influence of disco and 80’s synth pop still runs throughout the album’s songs, giving the music a sultry, nighttime feel. The dark colors and the bokeh running through the photography for this design mimic that feel, inviting listeners to step into a different world.
The end result was album packaging that captured the shameless romanticism of the album, and had a sense of cohesiveness throughout all its elements. The use of a gatefold design adds value to the vinyl by making it into more of a collector's item.
