I’ve always been interested by circus art, and specially about the side shows and the backstage side. Observing that is like an opened window to a small parallel world. How fascinating are those people. To me, they really are the icons and the soul of an original circus. This is why I wanted to give them a little tribute through those portraits. Inspired by movies such as Tod Browning’s “Freaks” or Henry Hathaway’s “World Circus.” My challenge was to create my own little circus, with my own cast of characters, imagining with my team who could match and how to direct them without hurting them because they were not from the real circus world. I felt really blessed working with that bunch of people. After a while, I truly got them to trust me and my project. We started playing like kids, everyone of them got involved in building their characters with disguise, props and make up. We shared so much, they gave me a lot, this ended up being my best shooting day ever! This is also why it’s important to me now, trying to make that work live, to show it. To share it.
