Growing up isolated in the country, I was grateful to the U.S. Postal Service for providing a connection to the rest of the world. For many who have counted on the delivery of critical supplies – like prescription medications – it has literally been a lifeline. Therefore, losing the P.O. would really feel like the death of an old trusted friend. Right after I heard about mailboxes being destroyed, and processing facilities closing, I passed a mailbox and shuddered when it appeared to me as a gravestone. Plus, I’ve always wondered about the "FOREVER" stamp, knowing that nothing lasts forever. So these words and images converged in my mind.
