Her Harbour is the moniker of Ottawa/Hull singer-songwriter, Gabrielle Giguere. Her voice is haunting, her songwriting is beautiful, and her live show is expansive, cinematic, and a touch apocalyptic. We were commissioned to create a poster for her concert celebrating the re-opening of Ottawa's 'The Record Centre,' a longstanding hub for vinyl records and turntable equipment.
My starting point of aesthetic inspiration was the Swedish illustrator Einar Nerman's depiction of female subjects in his work: blocks of bright colour, and effortless curves contrasted with hard angles in figures, hairdos, and facial features.
The poster's subject is the exemplification of the key themes in Giguere's songwriting: the weight and darkness that we carry, the light that we are capable of creating, and our parental relationships with the ocean and the sun. The subject is the mother, the ocean woman, the keeper of the darkness, and the carrier of the light.
