In April 2019, Porto City Hall launched an open call to all citizens, local and foreign, amateur and professional, asking for original photographs that portrayed the city under different or contemporary perspectives. The call involved a competition that distinguished the three best contributions, elected by a specialised jury. The turnout was surprising, in both quantity and quality, and to make all contributions accessible they were published in a catalogue, to honor the crowd sourced visual content and celebrate the participatory nature of the project.
To design this book, we adopted the rational model of an atlas, mapping the city through the many distinct gazes of the responders and their images, organized by location. The landscapes and skylines, the passing of time, light, the monuments, local people, tourists, the changing face of an ever evolving city was cartographed through more than 2000 pictures. The book materialises into a print version of a browsed city, with the multiple results of geolocated image searches.
