The assignment? Promote the third year of the Moontower Comedy Festival and feature the various comedians performing at the event. Our challenge was to make this more surprising than typical comedy show advertising that simply lists the performers and times.
We took our latest campaign to a place we knew potential patrons would frequent: bathrooms of bars and comedy clubs in Austin. We wrapped the stalls with jokes from the headlining acts drawn in the style of traditional bathroom graffiti. Each installation featured hundreds of jokes and quips from the acts and corresponding portraits of the headliners including Aziz Ansari, Hannibal Buress, Kids in the Hall, Dennis Miller and Maria Bamford, as well as strategically placed URLs and the occasional hand-drawn festival logo.
We also created our own stereotypical ‘bathroom posters’ to graffiti over and some 'just in case you piss yourself' disposable underwear dispensers.
Not only was the client excited about the work, the bathrooms turned into impromptu "sets" where local news shows interviewed the artists. The festival was a huge success and in just three years has become the second most important comedy festival in North America.
