In "Hwatu," each flower symbolizes a single month, and the style of painting has been localized in South Korea since the 1950s. Only four colors (red, yellow, blue, and black) are used in the whole card set. HongDan is one of the sets that can win the game, with three points from the pine tree (January), the plum blossom (February), and the cherry blossom (March). I found out these elements - symbolization, usage of cmyk, and visual language throughout the game - have a strong relation to graphic design, and decided to reinterpret HongDan from a graphic design perspective.
I started by designing visual icons for flowers that symbolize HongDan. HongDan is the only card set that does not contain blue color, so I carefully interpreted the ratio of three other colors that are used. Based on this ratio, I worked on the layout of icons, colors, and typography. The repetition of the word HongDan in Korean symbolizes the identity of the rock band.
