The film Hidden Figures highlights the accomplishments of three women who were given little opportunity as black women in a male-dominated and unequal society. We wanted to honor these women by creating a title sequence that was visually classic and inspiring paired with epic music to extend the idea of achieving greatness. We found it important to shed light on the unseen and this project was an opportunity for that. We did this by emphasizing the themes that worked against the three women but representing it as something magnificent that ultimately played to their success.

The initial stages of this project began by studying the elements of the film which we found to be most important to the symbolism of the story. By using analog methods, we moved rough sketches on paper around on a table, figured out how to best convey our message, and determined the flow of our story.

Outer space is seen to be an infinite and magical place with much to discover. We intended for the shift of scenery from the wonders of space to a mundane office environment to accentuate the accomplishments of the great minds of three black women. We utilized dramatic lighting and a slowed camera movement to provide an overall mysterious and magical feeling to our sequence.

In this project, one of our biggest challenges included using learning and using Arnold with very little prior experience. We ran into several bumps with this particular challenge technically and creatively. However, as a team, we were able to work together effectively and problem-solve quickly in order to achieve the visions we had imagined.

Our project was submitted into the Fall 2019 ArtCenter Hillside Student Gallery and selected by faculty to be submitted in the Promax Awards. Reception toward our project has been very positive and continues to be a strong project for our team members.
