Assignment
Self initiated commentary, poster.
Approach
Alone Online
A commentary on human behaviour, interaction and perception in relation to the online world, real or perceived connectivity. The composition is not meant as ‘fast food’ in terms of instant recognition/gratification; it seeks query and engagement.
Is the origin of today’s social media ‘craze’ found in someone’s fear of being alone, of not being part of the group, of not being accepted, loved, etc.?
Does this fear of not being alone fuel human behaviour to the extent that today it has become extremely intense due to the worldwide web which promised to bring us together?
While real, perceived and fake connections are multiplying at vast speeds the opposite reaction - of isolation - seems to become more noticeable.
Here I have explored the relationship between the words “Alone” and “Online”. While the letters contained in both words suggest a physical/visual connectivity/similarity, the meaning of the two words combined in this constellation is seen in a new light through the isolation of “i”. (the single person, the ‘me’ in the surrounding net of links and connections)
The word “Online” is not instantly recognisable, it becomes visible during the discovery of the other words (5 x the word “Alone”) and the isolation of “i”.
Results
Drawing all those lines and connections (no algorithm involved here) seriously isolated me from the world during the process . . . ;-)
