"I Heart Justice" was a poster show dedicated to social justice that was a joint project of Texas Appleseed and AIGA Austin. Twenty artists/designers from across Texas were invited to create posters about various social justice topics that were then showcased in an exhibition. Proceeds from the sale of the posters benefitted Texas Appleseed.
Texas Appleseed is a nonprofit, nonpartisan public interest justice center dedicated to promoting social and economic justice for all Texans. Appleseed works to change unjust laws and policies that prevent Texans from realizing their full potential.
The school-to-prison pipeline is really a catch-all phrase for an interconnected series of complex issues. The poster is a great medium for simplifying, humanizing, and censuring these kinds of wicked problems. Rather than being too simplistic or naive in designing a poster that might insinuate some kind of solution to the problem—or be too convoluted in trying to explain the workings of the pipeline—I decided to boil the problem down to a fundamental truth: we need to save our children from this unjust system.
The exhibition garnered lots of support from the community, and nearly $15,000 were raised at the opening.
