Renewal of the cafe located at the entrance of Kyoto University of Art and Design. Theaters, galleries and offices are connected to here, and many classrooms are on the upper floor. Various people loving arts come and go at this place. We took two missions mainly. Symbolizing this place as a cultural hub in Kyoto. And, facility planning corresponding to the various development of the menu.
Kyoto city is surrounded on three sides by mountains. Three mountains were the base of the characteristic culture respectively. And this university is located on the slopes of Higashiyama (East Mountain). We formed an area by covering floor, wall and ceiling with the same pattern in the different materials (oak, Japanese cedar, steel cable rack with LED). The pattern similar to herringbone is called “Ayasugi" in Japan. It is the icon of mountains or trees. And, “Area of Ayasugi" is a metaphor of the history and the culture in Kyoto.
The users of the cafe largely increased than before. Probably they were looking for an open and warm atmosphere and a clear characteristic. This interior design has become a new symbol of the university. The cafe menu will be renewed in 2016, and this place will be energized more. The student team will participate in the management of the cafe continuously and will take the development in future.
