A bakery is a business and not a “religious institution.” When the owners of Sweet Cakes by Melissa refused a same sex couple’s request for a wedding cake, they broke the law. Under the Oregon Equality Act, private businesses cannot deny anyone services based on sexual orientation.
The owners, Melissa and Aaron Klein, are facing up to $150,000 in penalties, but plan to appeal any decision against their right to stand up for “religious freedom.”
