The client is the United Nations Postal Administration. The UNPA sought to launch a commemorative stamp to celebrate the coming Chinese lunar new year of 2018, which is the year of dog in Chinese zodiac culture. They entrusted Mr Pan to design it for them as they believe he is a leading graphic designer in China.
The designer used figure-ground to present the images of dogs, who appear hand in hand with each other and leave no gap in between, signifying all cultures are melting gradually and globalization is the trend of the times. The major two images, Chung (Male, red) and May(Female, yellow), represent respectively the best wishes of Chinese, loyalty and beauty. The harmonious relationship of them conveys the value of peace between different sexes and races. The bell on May’s neck is illustrated to be the nose of Chung, which is also a sign that means the effort that the UN has spent in the allocation of resources in the whole world.
The UNPA accepted the design in an agreeable way as they thought it conveys successfully what they want to tell the whole world—harmonization. With regard to the showcase of Chinese culture, the design is thought to be done in a remarkable way. The stamps were all sold out in Chinese market so far and many people try to contact the designer to get a single piece.
